EMV, which stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa, has been used in Europe for years. EMV provides an added layer of security is designed to protect your funds from fraud.

The additional layer of EMV security works during transaction when used with merchants utilizing EMV transaction hardware. Learn more about the EMV chip. Because this technology is very new to the US, not all merchants will be offering EMV card readers. For those that do (such as Walmart, Target and Home Depot) you would insert your card as shown in the image below and watch the online EMV Connection video tutorial.

For those merchants who don’t have EMV card readers, simply swipe your card as you have in the past. As this equipment becomes more prevalent, the EMV network will become stronger. An Oct. 1, 2015 deadline was created by major U.S. credit card issuers MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express for shifting fraud liability. Card-present fraudulent transactions will be examined to see whichever party (bank or merchant) is the least EMV-compliant.

Members will see new cards arrive in the mail the week of August 10th and they need to be activated before September 15th when old cards will be deactivated. If you have any questions regarding your Metro Credit Union card, feel free to give us a call at 402.551.3052 or 800.301.8549.
